GE #DroneWeek:
Rio Olympics

Social Docu-Series •Photo series • Live Stream

DRONEWEEK is an award-winning content platform created to showcase GE’s innovations in equally innovative ways.

For this installment, our goal was to demonstrate the amazing ways GE powers the Rio Olympics Games from behind the scenes – from the stadiums to the athlete’s tech, and even the city’s infrastructure.

Programming includes a 5-episode docuseries, daily livestreams, and a million pieces of supporting content – all shot entirely from drones.

We kick off #DRONEWEEK from the Brazil Technology Center in Rio, where GE researchers are developing new technology that impacts industries around the world. Join us for a celebration of drones with a synchronized, illuminated aerial ballet at sunset.

Episode 1: Opening Drone Ceremony

Episode 2: Paddler Diagnostics

The Brazilian national sprint canoe team joins us at Lagoa de Marapendi to show how GE is helping them train more effectively with connected diagnostic technology. Our squad of drones will give us multiple vantage points of the action as we observe a live training session on the water.

We bring our drones back to the Brazil Technology Center to take a look at how the GE Store works. We’ll see how innovations in one industry can be fluidly applied to a completely different industry. Today, we’ll observe how GE brings medical diagnostic technology to athletes at the Rio Olympic Park and how it uses that same technology to monitor the health of deep-sea oil and gas pipelines.

Episode 3: From human to subsea diagnostics

We’ll peek inside the enormous International Broadcast Center at the heart of the Rio Olympic Park to see how GE is powering the uninterrupted broadcast of the world’s most-watched sporting event. We’ll also see how GE is harnessing the renewable power of nature at sites like the massive Itaipu Binacional Power Plant and reliably delivering that power across Brazil to meet increased demand for the games.

Episode 4: Powering the Rio Olympic Games

Before we close out #DRONEWEEK from the Rio Olympic Park at sunset with a final synchronized, illuminated drone ballet, we’ll take an aerial tour through Arena Carioca 3 where fencing and taekwondo competitions will take place. We’ll see how intelligent lighting systems, powered by GE, are not only lighting the games but transforming landmarks like Rio’s Flamengo Park and a beautiful bridge in Florianopolis.
